The main difference between iPad apps and iPhone apps is in the screen real estate. The iPad screen - at 9.7-inches - is much bigger than the smartphone display, about the same size as a netbook. However, netbooks do not provide the same intimacy.

This is where Apple technology really excels. You pass right through the technology and feel as though you are in the web, in the game or whatever particular application you're using.

These apps range from free to quite pricey and you'll find yourself changing your behaviour, reading more than you used to and learning more than you used to also.

The market research group predicts that the iPad will represent 74.1pc of global tablet shipments in 2010, with the remainder accounting for a mixture of older PC-type tablets and slates.

While a number of competitors will emerge in 2011, Apple will keep a 70.4pc share of the market.

iSuppli predicts that the iPad will still have the majority share of the market in 2012, at 61.7pc. The rate it drops at will be due to the developing competition between newer tablets.

"Although the iPad has been on the market for only a few months, powerful interests throughout the technology business are devoting enormous resources to challenge and topple Apple's domination in this fast-growing marketplace," said Rhoda Alexander, director of monitor research at iSuppli.

"However, if recent history is any lesson, it will take some time for these companies to get their products to market, longer for them to offer necessary software support and infrastructure, and an even lengthier period to begin to rival the overall user experience Apple is able to deliver."

While the research firm notes that potential iPad competitors exist in the form of HP, Dell and Lenovo's upcoming tablets, they believe that none of them can seriously challenge Apple's tablet from a solution perspective.

"Companies are quickly developing products that match or exceed some of the surface hardware specifications of the Apple iPad," Alexander said.

"But it's still unlikely that any of the competitors will be able to equal the overall performance experience of the iPad.

I mentioned a few bits of Android news today and we now see Gartners latest smartphone data that shows the meteoric rise of Android over the last year from 1.8% to a whopping 17.2% with no end in sight. Symbian is down 10%, RIM is down 1%, Apple iOS is up 1%, and WM is down 4.3%. The overall smartphone market has grown significantly over the past year from 41 million to 61.6 million so there was significant growth in the market. This latest data shows me that there is real potential here for Microsoft to make a similar comeback with the launch of Windows Phone 7 (see my guide on the Technical Preview) later this year for a couple of reasons that I will explain below.

Symbian is way down because they have not had a competitive high end smartphone product for at least a year and are in transition from S60 to Symbian so product releases have been quite stagnant. RIM sales look to have been fairly steady, but companies that issue BlackBerry devices do not move as fast as consumers and some people have been waiting for BB 6. After using a BB Torch for a few days I think RIM will stay pretty flat moving forward and most likely will continue losing market share. Apples iOS slowed down significantly, but with their once a year release this was expected. I am sure the next quarter numbers will show a rise with the successful sales of the iPhone 4. Windows Mobile has continued to lose significant market share with no OS update as we all wait for WP7.

Android is successful because they provide a compelling OS that is available on every carrier in several different form factors. There is a lot of choice for the consumer and prices have fallen to a standard of $200 for high end subsidized smartphones. Android launched on the T-Mobile G1 in late 2008 and was pretty flat for at least the first year with few devices and few carriers with Android devices. The Verizon Motorola Droid really put Android on the map and generated the kind of excitement I expected with such a powerful OS. Google has continued to update and improve the OS too.

I think Microsoft has the opportunity to do the same thing as Android with their multi-carrier support, various form factor choices, and a compelling operating system that is focused on the end user experience while still meeting the needs of enterprise customers. The latest BlackBerry 6 OS is still not very touch friendly and I think Windows Phone 7 will be more appealing to those looking for a fun device to also use for getting work done on the go. Like Android, sales may be a bit flat at first while people come back to a Microsoft product, but Microsoft is in it for the long haul and as more devices and updates appear I think sales will increase significantly.

At few days ago, Google announced the introduction of version 4.4 of Google Maps for Android. This release placed on the Official Google Mobile Blog. The company has been updated the Google Maps app for Android at least once a month for the past six months. Just last month, the application was updated version 4.3 to include public transit schedules, restaurant ratings, and a better way to add friends on Latitude.

Well, today, the new update introduces a new Places icon to help users easily and quickly find establishments such as restaurants, coffee shops, movie theaters, gas stations, or any other type of local business around them.

In the 18 months since Android first launched, the mobile OS has gradually gained a sense of inevitability. It has reached the point where it is often talked about in the technology industry as if it is manifest destiny that Android will be the dominant platform in mobile computing.

However, todays mobile market is vastly different than the PC market of the 1980s and 90s. Lets take a look at Androids and how likely it is that Android will emerge as the platform of choice.

During the first half of the last decade, the smartphone market was dominated by BlackBerry and Palm Treo (and Nokia outside the U.S.). At the time, these devices were primarily used as a way to get your mail and calendar on your cellphone, and occasionally to access a specialized business application that connected to one of your companys backend databases. The audience was almost completely corporate.

In June 2007, Apple changed the game with the launch of the iPhone. It brought a lot of consumers into the smartphone market with a touchscreen device that ditched the hardware qwerty form factor of the BlackBerry and the Treo and was much simpler to navigate and use. All the hoopla around the iPhone also had the halo effect of educating the public about smartphones and helped create greater consumer demand for smartphones in general.

With the iPhone, it took Apple another year to get the price down, add 3G connectivity, make it enterprise-friendly, and open it up to application developers. But, the revolution had already started. The race was on for other vendors to build mobile devices with three key features to match the iPhone:
A touchscreen user interface
Mobile Web capability
An application platform

BlackBerry came out with the Storm. Palm launched the Pre and a completely redesigned OS to power it. Nokia made its play with the N97. HTC built the Touch Pro and then the Touch Pro2, both running Windows Mobile. And, Microsoft recently hit the restart button on its mobile platform with Windows Phone 7.

None of these iPhone killers did anything to stop the iPhones growth and momentum. It wasnt until Google entered the smartphone market in October 2008 that the competition for the future of mobile computing really started heating up.

Another benefit to the new Google Android 2.2 Froyo update that was not listed in the release notes is full support for voice control via Bluetooth. You can now control you Google Android device wirelessly and get that much more functionality out of it.
One reason I tried to stick with my T-Mobile HD2 was the fantastic support for Bluetooth headset voice control with Microsoft Voice Command that was integrated into the device. We saw Google Android 2.2 (Froyo) released for the Nexus One this past weekend and one surprisingly good addition in the update is full support for Google voice commands via Bluetooth headsets. I tried out the Jawbone ICON just to see how well Bluetooth worked and found the hands-free voice support to work very well with my updated Nexus One.

As more and more states move to hands-free laws, including my home state of Washington, it is very important that Bluetooth functionality be fully supported on these devices. Did you also see in my article on the TouchDown Exchange application that you can have your emails spoken to you with TouchDown? Google Android continues to evolve and get better and better. Apple may have ignited the smartphone market three years ago, but Google Android is much faster moving and has now set the bar pretty high for everyone else and is not slowing down.

There are some other improvements in the new update that I havent seen specifically listed and I found the following that are quite important to me:

Ability to go to previous or next email in Gmail app using new bottom arrows
New three button center Home screen layout (Phone, Apps, Browser)
Preinstalled Twitter and Google Goggles
Quick Gmail account switcher in top right corner of Gmail
New task switcher supporting more running apps when you press and hold the Home button

I was running the HTC Desire ROM with HTC Sense on it before making the jump back to a Google Experience with Froyo and thanks to TouchDown providing a much better Exchange experience than anything else on Android I think I will be pleased with this plain Google OS. My device flies and I have yet to see a Force Close error appear on my Nexus One. I am pleased to have full Bluetooth back and am really enjoying some of those small improvements that turn into major user experience improvements, primarily the email previous/next arrows, WiFi Hotspot capability, and one-button application updates. I look forward to further developer support of applications stored on the SD card so I wont run into low memory errors in the future.
Experiences with Adobe Flash

There is quite a bit of debate going on over Adobe Flash and HTML5, but end users just want a solution that works are most could care less which standard(s) are used. I loaded up the public beta of the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 software as soon as my Nexus One was upgraded to Android 2.2 and honestly had pretty low expectations for the player. The Nexus One was released back in January and even though it has hardware that is still at the high end I wasnt sure it would run Flash satisfactorily. The first site I visited was PopCap Games since I know there have several Flash games and figured there was no way they were going to work. Plants vs Zombies started up, but then stalled out while Zuma, Bejeweled, xx, and others played just fine (as showed in my video). I then went to the NBC site and watched Parks and Rec, which played well for several minutes before the voice got out of sync with the video. A site that has not worked on ANY mobile device before that has my wife hooked on the games is Webkinz so to test the limits I tried visiting this site from the Google Nexus One. I was able to load it and login and amazingly the site actually works. I was able to play some games, but on some the controls are not able to be manipulated with the Nexus One touchscreen. I am just blown away that this pop-up screen Flash heavy site even works as well as it does on a mobile phone.

I performed a Google search and found a link to the Top 10 best Flash websites of 2010 so I could try them out on the Nexus One. A couple worked fine, but most struggled or were not optimized for the mobile device. Engadget posted a video comparison of Flash on the Nexus One and Flash Lite on the HTC Desire and as you can see Flash is looking good on the Nexus One and Froyo.

Flash doesnt concern me too much personally since I just avoid sites with Flash on my mobile phone. However, finding that PopCap Games plays well is a bonus and I will probably be using Flash now more than I would have if it wasnt supported.

Nokia has filed a lawsuit against Apple in a Federal court in Wisconsin over five patents. Nokia, which is already suing Apple over the iPhone, added iPad 3G products to its list of targets.

Nokia said in its complaint that Apple is infringing on one or more of its patents with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPad 3G. The Wi-Fi only iPad is off the list. Also: Nokia sues Apple again; iPhone, iPad 3G patents at stake.

According to Nokia:

Nokia is harmed by Apples unauthorized use of Nokia patented technology in a way that cannot be compensated for by a payment of damages alone. Nokia and Apple compete directly, with respect to at least certain Apple product offerings. Apples unauthorized use of the patents-in-suit in its products at the time of their sale allows it to charge less for its products because it does not have to recover the costs of development of the technology used in the device. This allows it to obtain market share that it would otherwise not be able to obtain were its products to bear the costs for the patented technology.

The patents include:

6,317,083 (the 083 Patent): This patent is entitled Antenna Having a Feed and a Shorting Post Connected Between Reference Plan and Planar Conductor Interacting to Form a Transmission Line, was issued in late 2001.

6,348,894 (the 894 Patent): The patent is called Radio Frequency Antenna, was issued in 2002. The patent reduces the space needed for an antenna, allowing tighter integration of components and smaller, more compact mobile phones.

6,373,345 (the 345 Patent): This patent is called Modulator Structure for a Transmitter and Mobile Station issued in 2002. Nokia says:

The 345 Patent is directed to a modulator with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Wireless communication devices, such as mobile phones, include one or more modulators that modify a carrier wave in order to transmit data. One of the most important characteristics of a modulator is its signal-to-noise ratio. Transmissions with a high signal-to-noise ratio are more likely to be received, offering a better experience to users. The 345 Patent provides a high signal-to-noise ratio while reducing the number of filters needed to do so.

6,603,431 (the 431 Patent): This patent is the Mobile Station and Antenna Arrangement in Mobile Station and was issued in 2003. Nokia says:

The patent allows for an internal antenna with greater performance by creating an antenna assembly space free of the printed circuit board. The increased space allows for design of slimmer devices and improves the antenna characteristics, including a broader impedance band and better radiation efficiency.

And 7,558,696: The 696 patent was issued 2009 and called the Method and Device for Position Determination. Nokia adds:

The 696 Patent relates to providing a centralized interface for applications running on a mobile device to obtain position data. The 696 Patent allows, for example, for application developers to make use of existing positioning capabilities, without having to write as much code for their applications.
